The Highlands Nature Friends
The Highlands Nature Friends, Inc. is the 501(c)3 non-profit membership organization that owns and operates The New Weis Center. We are made up of people and groups, both local and from around the country, who have fond memories of spending the summer here or enjoying educational programs, events or day camp, and who support the preservation of the property, historic buildings, and community-based nature themed programming.
After NJ Audubon closed the Weis Ecology Center, several of us got together informally in 2013 as "Nature Friends for Preserving Weis” and began thinking about how we could preserve the buildings and their rich history, bring back popular programs, develop
exciting new programs and events, and transform the property into the community and regional resource we envisioned.
When we learned that the transfer of the Weis Ecology Center property from NJ Audubon to the NJ DEP was being discussed, and would mean the destruction of every building, and knew we had to act. In May, 2014 we incorporated as a NJ non-profit (The Highlands Nature Friends, Inc.) and obtained Federal recognition as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization in August, 2014.
